Hutchinson WWTF Headworkds Improvements
The project included the replacement of screening and grit removal systems, the relocation of a flow
splitting structure which divides flow to 3 downstream processes: membrane bioreactor (MBR), oxidation
ditch, and flow equalization (EQ) basin, and the upsizing of the EQ lift station and force main. The new
flow splitting structure utilizes weir gates to control the flow among the three processes. A detailed analysis
of flowrates and peak events was performed to determine the best solution for handling peak flows. The evaluation
connected the control strategy and lengths of the splitter box weir gates to the utilization of the EQ basin
volume and sizing of the subsequent pumping from the EQ basin to accomplish goals of operation ease during
both average and peak flow conditions.
